Pascal's Wager

Pascal's Wager is a philosophical argument presented by the 17th-century philosopherBlaise Pascal. It posits that humans bet with their lives that God either exists or does not exist.

The Argument

  1. If you believe in God and God exists, you will be rewarded with eternal life in heaven: Infinite gain.
  2. If you believe in God and God does not exist, you will have lost little or nothing: Finite loss.
  3. If you do not believe in God and God exists, you will be condemned to remain in hell forever: Infinite loss.
  4. If you do not believe in God and God does not exist, you will have gained little or nothing: Finite gain.

Given these possibilities, Pascal concludes that the rational choice is to believe in God, as it is the option that maximizes potential gains and minimizes potential losses.
